Our Bistro & Bar has added some flavorful brews, to their varied domestic and imported beer list. While sharing a "timeout" from the business world in the bar with my peeps, I had an epiphany. Holding an ice cold drink in my hand, I was slouched in the booth, and wondered if anyone else had ever been casually socializing, when a member of their party starts to reminisce...
"Man, I remember the time that I had THE BEST BEER EVER!" We were out West, it was the fall of '84. Some of us were sitting out by the campfire toasting marshmallows, and the kids were playing a game of corn hole. The Eagles had just beat Dallas, and us guys were discussing highlights from the game. I was wearing the burgundy striped t-shirt, that my daughter gave me for Father's Day, it was 75 degrees outside, around 9:30pm. Terrific night!" He continued with details, as he described how the beer he had consumed that particular evening, was a beer like no other. "It had a r e a l l y rich bronze color, with some golden reddish undertones. The hop flavor wasn't too bright, full bodied, and just right. It was a little spicy, with a legit velvety feel. Oh, it was sooooo good!"
I think I must have sat there for a good 10 seconds not blinking, looking at him with my mouth gaping open. The visualization of this precious gem-like beverage, and the impression that it had made on its recipient, was stupefying! I was completely drawn to the intricate details of his story. He knew the precise name of the beer, how many bottles were created, the ingredient list, and the city of origination. Being a wine drinker myself, I was pretty certain that I had never witnessed ANYONE going on and on about a particular glass of wine, and then practically comparing it to an out of body experience! I felt completely disjointed from the conversation that day, and this verbal exchange never left my mind. The whole subject matter was unrelatable to me, UNTIL, I visited my son in Texas.
It was a hot and muggy day in the city of Austin. Rain clouds were ever present, as he gave me a mini tour of his favorite haunts. Toward the middle of the day, we visited a micro-brewery for lunch, and I have to tell you...I had THE BEST local IPA, that I have E V E R tasted!! I will never forget the flavor of the honey sweetened brew, the clear golden yellow coloring of it, as the light danced through my sparkling goblet! More importantly, I will always remember sitting at the red oak grained table, eating delicious pizza, having stimulating conversation with the young man who has grown up so quickly. The image of the two of us smiling, with decor of wooden barrels surrounding us, while we toasted to good life and a year of fulfillment, is a moment in my life, that I will always treasure. Here's to fantastic memories, and dare I say, excellent beer!
